The appointee will work on an Australian Research Council supported
project on Question Answering Systems within the AnswerFinder project
at the Centre for Language Technology (http://www.clt.mq.edu.au).

AnswerFinder combines traditional approaches to natural language
processing with current robust approaches. In an indexing stage,
AnswerFinder builds the logical form of the document sentences. In the
retrieval stage, the question is thoroughly analysed. A fall-back
retrieval procedure returns the sentence fragments whose logical forms
are most compatible with the logical form of the question.

The appointee will contribute to the development of the system and its
localisation to practical applications and evaluation environments
such as the Text REtrieval Conference.

Essential Criteria at Level A
-----------------------------

PhD (or submitted thesis) in Computer Science or Computational
Linguistics or a related area; strong background in an area related to
question answering; strong programming skills; ability to present
research results at scientific meetings and to publish in the
scientific literature; excellent written and oral communication
skills.

Additional Essential Criteria for Level B
-----------------------------------------

At least three years postdoctoral research experience or equivalent in
the area of question answering; strong publication record.

Salary Range
------------

Level A - up to $65,084 pa, including base salary $40,662 - $54,997
pa, up to 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading.  An
appointee with a PhD will be appointed to a minimum of Point 6 on the
salary scale, currently $51,271 pa.

Level B - $68,480 to $81,208 pa, including base salary $57,866 to
$68,617 pa, 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading.



This position is available on a full-time (fixed-term) basis for a
period of 30 months and may be subject to probationary
