=== Workshop rationale and potential audience ===

After the successful First International Workshop 'Language Resources (LR)
for Translation Work & Research', we are pleased to announce a second
international edition, aiming at consolidating this workshop series among
a wider and more heterogeneous translation community.

We wish to raise further awareness about the usefulness of language
resources (LR) in every aspect and facet of translation: from educational
and on-the-job training (including e-learning and new forms of
technology-facilitated training), to LR as created, managed and exploited
by freelance and in-house language professionals. In so doing, we intend
to allow for fruitful discussion and expertise exchange among
practitioners, researchers, and trainers alike. We would be particularly
keen to see a more prominent representation of the language industries at
the event.

Since this workshop edition will be held under the auspices of COLING, the
participation of computational linguists with an interest in translation
technologies and multilingual content production cycles will also be
expected and favoured.


=== Workshop history, topics and contents ===

The first edition of this workshop series was celebrated in Las Palmas,
Spain, on 28th May 2002, as a satellite event of LREC 2002 (Third Language
Resources and Evaluation Conference), under the title ‘Language Resources
for Translation Work & Research’. More information about the resulting

The title of this second international workshop has been extended to
include the word "training" as we would particularly like to welcome
papers about training initiatives that echo the importance of language
resources (LR) for translation and language work. Distance learning or
technology-enhanced training about LR would be of great interest.
Nevertheless, this is not the only technical focus of the workshop as we
wish to deepen in all the issues already proposed in the previous edition.
It will also be essential to learn more about current procedures of
multilingual content production and management and the role of language
resources therein.

We welcome contributions from academia, industry and heterogeneous
translation arena representatives to exchange views and results in
relation to one or more of the following topics:

::: Reference corpora and other types of corpora (bilingual, multilingual,
parallel, comparable, do-it-yourself corpora...)

::: Alignment techniques

::: Translation memories

::: Machine translation

::: Exploiting the WWW

::: Terminology: compilation, extraction, management

::: Content management

::: Creation, use and leverage of LR

::: Technical writing - multilingual issues

::: Evaluation of LR

::: Role of LR in the translation process (case studies and combinatory
approaches, i.e. use of more than one resource), their integration,
exchange and reusability

::: E-learning for translators - LR-informed? Required skills?


=== Workshop format - Time schedule and preliminary agenda ===

This workshop will run for a whole working day, with mid-morning, lunch
and mid-afternoon pauses, and at least one keynote speaker to be confirmed
later. It is envisaged that we will have a pretty busy schedule, with 10
to 12 paper submissions (presentations) depending on the number, relevance
and quality of paper submissions. We will also strive to offer a final
round table, lasting for about 30 minutes.

=== Useful information about paper submissions ===

The first contributions will be submitted electronically only, in .doc or
.rtf format, to Ms Yuste (yuste at ifi.unizh.ch) not any later than 8th March
2004. They should be written in (acceptable and understandable) English as
this will be the official language of the workshop/conference. Should the
paper deal with issues relating to other languages, the author(s) is (are)
kindly requested to provide the corresponding English translation.

Papers should contain an abstract of maximum 150 words and a relevant list
of references at the end of the paper. Figures and screenshots should be
kept to a minimum. The expected paper length will be around 5,000 words
including abstract, references and notes. The articles should not have any
information about the author(s) such as name or affiliation; however,
submissions will not be accepted if they are not accompanied by a separate
text file containing the following data: name and full affiliation of the
author(s), i.e. position and contact details (mail address, phone, fax,
e-mail and website, if any), short CV and list of publications (if
relevant to the workshop topic and own contribution).

We also inform potential authors that their contributions will be
published in the workshop proceedings within COLING’04 and, therefore, the
papers selected for publication will have to adhere to COLING edition
rules. More details about this will be made available by COLING and us in
due course.
