Dear Aleem,

The problem is 'semantic tagging' could mean word sense disambiguation, semantic field annotation, sense tagging, semantic role labelling, named-entity extraction, mark-up for the semantic web or a number of other things as witnessed by the replies to your message so far ...

If you can wait, there will be a survey published as

Rayson, P. and Stevenson, M. (forthcoming) Sense and semantic tagging, chapter 27 in Lüdeling, A., Kytö, M., and McEnery, A. Corpus Linguistics, Handbooks of Linguistics and Communication Science (HSK) (Series), Mouton de Gruyter, Berlin.

If you can't wait, contact me off-line. In the meantime, I'd recommend Mark's book/thesis on WSD as background reading:

Word Sense Disambiguation: The Case for Combining Knowledge Sources

Dear all,

Does anybody know of a "state of the art" / overview paper on semantic
taggers? Failing that, could you recommend a couple of "key" papers to
help me on my way?

Cheers,
Aleem
