Longman Dictionaries, part of Pearson Education, is looking for a hands-on
data programmer/project manager for six months (or possibly longer) starting
as soon as possible. The role involves the following tasks:
- XML conversion/parsing of monolingual and bilingual dictionary data
- CD-ROM data preparation. Taking existing content and delivering to
software developers in an agreed XML format, ensuring that data is fully
validated and parsed before supplying. A wide range of data is to be
supplied, including dictionary text, pictures, spoken audio, etc. This
involves linking different assets like sound files and pictures to entries
- setting up new projects on an XML editing system for lexicographic
compilation
The ideal candidate would have the following skills:
* Excellent data preparation skills, preferably involving XML content
development and validation. Experience of programming essential, involving
appropriate data processing languages such as PERL, AWK, C, or OMNIMARK.
* Experience of HTML, CSS and JavaScript
* Experience of standard project management techniques, using
Microsoft Project, an advantage.
* Good communication skills, able to communicate objectives and
maintain an excellent working relationship with in-house editorial and
technical staff and occasionally external suppliers.
* CD-ROM software development experience would be useful but not
essential
* Working knowledge of European or Asian languages an advantage
The work is available immediately, initially for a period of around 6
months, and is based in Harlow, UK (midway between Cambridge and London).
