The Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) is a university with an

profile, located at the heart of the Dutch capital. As well as a world

Faculty of Science
The Faculty of Science at the Universiteit van Amsterdam is one of
Europe's foremost
institutions of higher education and research in its chosen fields of
specialization. It plays
an active role in international science networks and collaborates with
universities and
industry. The Faculty has approximately 2,000 students and 1,500 staff
members spread
over four departments and ten research institutes. Each institute has
its own research
Programme, a substantial part of which is externally funded by the
Netherlands
Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), the Dutch government, the EU
and various
private enterprises.
In 2009, the Faculty will relocate to the Science Park Amsterdam.
Ambitious building
projects are paving the way for this relocation. The move will make the
Park one of the
largest centers of academic research in the Netherlands.
Institute for Logic, Language and Computation
The Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) is an
interdisciplinary research
institute of the University of Amsterdam, in which researchers from the
Faculty of Science
and the Faculty of Humanities collaborate. ILLC's central research area
is the study of
fundamental principles of encoding, transmission and comprehension of
information.
Emphasis is on natural and formal languages, but other information
carriers, such as images
and music, are studied as well. The ILLC takes part in the teaching
programs of
mathematics, computer science, artificial intelligence, philosophy and
linguistics. More

Vacancy
The ILLC has a vacancy for a teaching position of 0.5 FTE at the level
of "Docent"
(Lecturer) in the area of natural language processing. The total
duration of this position is
for five years (tenure is not planned). According to standard procedure
in the Faculty
of Science, the first year serves as an evaluation period for
determining the suitability of the
candidate for the position.
Starting date: As early as November 2006 but before January 2007.
Description of duties
Teaching of natural language processing subjects within the different
bachelor and master
curriculum of the faculty of Science. Supervision and mentoring of
students, student
projects and master's theses.
Requirements
Eligible candidates must hold a PhD in computational linguistics or
computer science.
We expect demonstrable experience with statistical models and/or machine
learning for
NLP supported by a publication track record. The ideal candidate must
have strong affinity
with teaching and supervising students, and preferably also experience
with lecturing at the
bachelor and/or master levels. Strong command of the English language is
necessary.
Command of the Dutch language is desirable (a clear desire to acquire
sufficient command
of the Dutch language within the first year(s) is appreciated).
Appointment
The appointment will be for a maximum of five years at the level of 0.5
FTE with the
first year serving as a trial period after which the candidate will be
evaluated
and a decision will be taken with regard to continuation of the contract.
The gross monthly salary, based on full appointment (1.0 FTE), ranges from
Euro 3.024,-- to Euro 4.140,-- (scale 11).
