Interesting discussion! And I don't think it's off-topic at all, as long 
as we stick to the philosophy of science of _corpus linguistics_.

If anybody is interested, my 10 year old Ph.D. thesis discusses things 
like these at length. I'm sure it will will provoke some of you. As a 
matter of fact, even I get a bit provoked by what I wrote at that time. :-)
