[Corpora-List] Comparing learner and expert corpora

Dear List
  I'm trying to compare word frequencies in a learner corpus and an expert corpus. The learner corpus has approximately 100000 more words. Is it possible that the reference corpus be smaller in size? What statistical tools should I use to get reliable results?
