The National Center for Integrative Biomedical Informatics (NCIBI) at
the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, [see http://ncibi.org] is
offering an interdisciplinary postdoctoral fellowship focused on
biomedical applications of natural language processing (NLP). The
project will provide an opportunity to combine the resources of the
NCIBI with major bioinformatics, computational, biomedical research
centers and will focus on collaboration between NCIBI and the National
Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of
Medicine, NIH, Bethesda. This project specifically will continue to
develop and apply NCIBI NLP and subgraph matching capabilities, in
conjunction with complementary efforts at NCBI/NLM, to relate
literature on molecular regulatory pathways to genes and diseases with
the goal of developing enhanced tools and methods for computational
biomedicine. The position is sponsored by the National Centers for
Biomedical Computing (NCBC) program of the NIH Roadmap to bridge
efforts across the NCBCs and other significant national centers and
resources.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in computer science, computational
linguistics, or a related field and be familiar with state-of-the-art
NLP technology. Knowledge of molecular biology and biomedical science
is highly desirable. The successful candidate will have excellent
communication skills, both verbal and written, and a good publication
record. She or he should be capable of succeeding in a collaborative
working environment, and developing an independent contribution to this
field. The individual chosen will have strong mentoring and access to
training and resources for research during this 2-year fellowship. This
position is open now; thus, immediate availability of the candidate
will be a consideration. The University of Michigan is an equal
opportunity/affirmative action employer. Please respond to James
Cavalcoli (cavalcol at umich.edu), Ph.D., Project Manager, National Center
for Integrative Biomedical Informatics (http://ncibi.org) or Brian
Athey (bleu at umich.edu), Ph.D., Principal Investigator.
