International conference on the 50th anniversary of the Trésor de la Langue Française

In November 1957, the Centre for Romance Philology and for Contemporary French Language and
Literature held a conference at the University of Strasbourg entitled “Lexicology and Lexicography in
French and Romance Languages: Directions and Current Requirements.” It was organised by Paul Imbs
to launch his project for a new dictionary of the French language. The main innovation of the Trésor de
la Langue Française (TLF)—as the project was to become—was its use of computer indexing of a wide
corpus of texts dating from 1789 to 1960. Lexicography has never looked back, making extensive use
of information and communication technology ever since.

Fifty years on, a new conference is being held to assess the influence of the TLF and its methodological
innovations, as well as on subsequent lexicographical practices, analysing the advantages, implications,
and consequences of such methods. As in 1957, this conference addresses the future of lexicography,
current projects and forthcoming research.

Conference themes:
· Methodological analyses of past and current practices for the TLF.
· Lexicographical projects inspired by the TLF.
· Major research areas and methodologies in current lexicographical practices.
· The future of lexicography and its domain of study.
· The relationship between NLP and computerised dictionaries.
· Emerging lexicographical practices.

Proposals for papers may be in one of the following areas:
· History and epistemology of modern lexicography.
· Different methodologies in lexicography and the creation of dictionary resources.
· NLP and lexicography.
· Language engineering and dictionary studies.
· Lexicography and multilingualism.
· Connections between lexicography and other language disciplines.

The official languages of the conference are French and English.

Submissions:

Proposals for papers in French or English should be sent as an e-mail attachment of 3 to 5 pages; the
attached proposals should be anonymous, with author’s name(s) and contact details in the body of the
e-mail. All proposals will be reviewed by at least two members of the scientific committee; proposals
for a poster session will also be considered. Accepted proposals will be published in the pre-conference
proceedings available to conference participants. Selected articles will appear in a 250/300-page
volume published by a reputable editor.

LEXICOGRAPHIE ET INFORMATIQUE : BILAN ET PERSPECTIVES
Colloque international à l’occasion du 50e anniversaire du lancement du projet du Trésor de la Langue
Française

En novembre 1957, le Centre de Philologie romane et de Langue et Littérature françaises
contemporaines réunissait, à l’Université de Strasbourg, un colloque intitulé « Lexicologie et
lexicographies françaises et romanes : orientations et exigences actuelles ». Son organisateur, Paul
Imbs, l’avait conçu pour lancer son projet de nouveau dictionnaire de la langue française. L’originalité
majeure du Trésor de la Langue Française qui se détermine à cette époque aura été de se fonder, entre
autres sources, sur l’indexation informatique d’un riche corpus de textes écrits entre 1789 et 1960.
Depuis, la lexicographie n’a cessé de recourir à l’informatique.

Cinquante ans plus tard, ce nouveau colloque voudrait tirer le bilan de cette innovation méthodologique
sur la pratique lexicographique du TLF et des travaux lexicographiques qui ont suivi ou qui sont en
cours : son intérêt, ses implications, ses conséquences. Il veut aussi, comme c’était l’ambition du
colloque de 1957, baliser la voie de la lexicographie à venir, celle des projets qui s’élaborent
aujourd’hui ou que préparent de nouvelles recherches.

Thèmes du colloque :
- Histoire et bilan méthodologiques du TLF.
- Les projets lexicographiques dans le sillage du TLF.
- Les grands chantiers lexicographiques actuels et leurs méthodologies.
- La lexicographie et les objets lexicographiques à venir.
- Les relations entre lexiques TAL et dictionnaires informatisés.
- Les applications lexicographiques émergentes.

Les propositions pourront relever des champs disciplinaires suivants :
- L’histoire et l’épistémologie de la lexicographie moderne.
- Les méthodologies en lexicographie et en constitution de ressources dictionnairiques.
- Le TAL et la lexicographie.
- L’ingénierie linguistique et la dictionnairique.
- La lexicographie et le multilinguisme.
- Les rapports entre la lexicographie et les autres disciplines du langage.

Langues du colloque : français, anglais.

Sélection des communications :
Les propositions de communications, en français ou en anglais, seront jointes dans un fichier attaché
au message contenant les coordonnées individuelles. Elles devront être formulées dans un texte
anonyme de 3 à 5 pages qui sera soumis à au moins deux lecteurs du comité scientifique. Une session
« posters » est également envisageable. Les propositions retenues donneront lieu à des pré-actes mis à
la disposition des participants au colloque. Une sélection d’articles sera publiée en un volume d’environ
250 à 300 pages, dans une maison d’éditions scientifiques.

- 1er  septembre 2007 : date limite de l’envoi des propositions de communication à tlf07-csn at atilf.fr
- 15 octobre 2007 : envoi de la décision du comité scientifique
- 31 octobre 2007 : établissement du programme définitif
