Dear Linas,
These are a few things (collected from Google) that I learned from talking with people and from reading texts. I may not agree with them. But they all tell me something about the meaning of 'table:'
A chair is not a table. It can be used as an table but it is not a table.
Picasso does not paint a table with the inscription that it is not a table; he paints a table which is not a table.
No, the answer runs, a bed is not a table since the objects to be placed on a bed are supposed to be people, while the objects put on the table are food or ...
Quite simply: the concept 'table' is not a table, in the sense that one cannot put anything on it, eat from it, etc.

On those occasions when a table is not a table, is it drinking somewhere and dialing the phone numbers of ex-girlfriends who married lawyers and listening ...
admit that a treetable is not a table, but a very special decoration of a tree.
For the oak collector, the smallest occasional table is not a table at all, but a joint stool.
