Background
CLARET (Corpus Linguistics Advanced Research Education and Training) is a new national research training programme in corpus linguistics running in the UK from November 2007 to June 2008. It is open to doctoral students whose work involves the investigation of large amounts of electronically-stored language data. The fourth CLARET postgraduate workshop on "Applications of Corpus Linguistics" will take place at the University of Birmingham, on Thursday 1 and Friday 2 May 2008.

Theme of the workshop
The Birmingham CLARET workshop aims to give participants an idea of the the extent to which corpus linguistics can be seen as "applied." Is corpus linguistics "more of the same," a methodology which uses large collections of electronic language data to elucidate traditional linguistic constructs, such as that-clauses or anaphoric reference? Or does the study of a corpus lead to the emergence of new linguistic features, such as semantic prosody or lexical bundles, which could never have been identified without a corpus? These questions are of considerable importance when formulating research questions, and the sessions aim to give participants the opportunity to explore them further in relation to their own work. The sessions will build on previous workshops in Liverpool, Nottingham, and Lancaster, and will consist of talks and hands-on sessions. Speakers include Nicholas Groom, Susan Hunston, Philip King, Almut Koester, Rosamund Moon, David Oakey, Wolfgang Teubert. A provisional timetable is at http://www.corpus.bham.ac.uk/claret/workshop.htm

How to apply
Applications are invited from eligible participants. Each CLARET workshop is limited to 30 places, with priority given to AHRC-funded doctoral students. There is a small fee of £10 per workshop for participants from partner institutions, and £40 per workshop for participants from other institutions. A subsidy is available towards participants' UK travel and accommodation costs for each workshop. For an application form and further details please see http://www.corpus.bham.ac.uk/claret/workshop.htm The deadline for applications for the Birmingham workshop is Friday 4 April 2008.

CLARET is a collaboration between the Universities of Birmingham, Lancaster, Liverpool, Nottingham, and Reading and is funded by award 07/01/N under the Arts and Humanities Research Council's Collaborative Research Training Scheme.
