PhD Opportunity in Brittany

A position is currently available to undertake a PhD in corpus linguistics and
NLP at the University of South Brittany, Lorient, France.

Collocational Resonance and Semantic Relationships in Corpora
This thesis will look at semantic relationships discovered from the analysis of
collocational patterning. The aim is to analyse collocational relationships in
large corpora in both French and English to study meaning transfer using the
notion of collocational resonance. Related theoretical frameworks will include
Lexical Functions, FrameNet et Corpus Pattern Analysis,
The study is situated between a contextual corpus linguistic approach and
natural language processing, notable in the area of question-answer systems and
ontologies. The thesis is part of the RESON Project, a collaborative project
between the LiCoRN research team in the Humanities Faculty specialised in corpus
linguistics and researchers in NLP from the VALORIA team of the University of
South Brittany. The thesis will be co-supervised by Geoffrey Williams,
HCTI-LiCoRN and Jeanne Villaneau, VALORIA,

Knowledge of Corpus linguistics and NLP as well as fluency in French are essential.
The University of South Brittany is a small, but very dynamic university located
in the Morbihan department in Brittany. It is centred around two towns, Vannes
and Lorient. 
Lorient is situated on the coast and is famous for its fishing port, its
football team and the nearby beaches. The hinterland is composed of woods and
hills of outstanding beauty. The research teams are involved in numerous
international project and collaborate in a very relaxed atmosphere. Lorient is
