I use XMLStarlet (http://xmlstar.sourceforge.net/) for most of my
prototyping. It is useful as XML grep and can spit out XSLT at the
end.
Other people suggested regex, but that would cause problems with
characters that XML escapes. Unless you are sure you are not going to
have brackets, quotes, etc, you need to be prepared for them to be
stored as named entities.
