Probably one of the most foundational pieces of research on collocation is  
Chapter 8 in: Sinclair, J. M. (1991). Corpus, Concordance,  Collocation. 
Oxford: OUP (see also Barbrook, G. 2007. Sinclair on  collocation. International 
Journal of Corpus Linguistics  12:183-199).
