Postdoc / PhD Position in Computational Modelling of Discourse & Semantics

* 2 years (extension possible)
* Saarland University, Germany,
  Cluster of Excellence "Multimodal Computing and Interaction"
  Junior Research Group "Comp. Modelling of Discourse & Semantics"
* Position open from October 2008 or later
* Application deadline: September 30, 2008

We invite applications for a research position ("Wissenschaftliche(r)
Mitarbeiter(in)") in computational modelling of discourse and lexical
semantics. The position is open from October 2008 (a later start date is
negotiable) for two years (extension possible). The position is suitable
for postdocs and PhD students. The successful candidate will join a
PhD student and the project leader in the newly established junior
research group "Computational Modelling of Discourse and Semantics"
(http://www.coli.uni-saarland.de/~csporled/CMDS.html) to work on the
SEASIDE project (Semantic Argument Structure In DiscoursE). The project
investigates links between semantic argument structure and discourse
structure, aiming to improve both shallow semantic parsing (aka
semantic role labelling) and discourse processing. The junior research
group is part of the recently established cluster of excellence
"Multimodal Computing and Interaction" (http://www.mmci.uni-saarland.de)
at Saarland University, which comprises 20 new independent junior research
groups in various fields of computer science and computational linguistics.

The ideal candidate has a university degree (Master, PhD or equivalent)
in Computational Linguistics, Computer Science, Linguistics, or a
related field. Postdocs should have finished (or be very close to
finishing) their PhD. Programming skills are required, as well as a
good command of English and the ability to work well in a team. Experience
with one or more of the following areas is an advantage:

- machine learning, statistical or data-driven approaches to natural
  language processing
- discourse processing (e.g. modelling discourse coherence, event
  extraction)
- computational lexical semantics (esp. semantic role labelling)

If desired, the researcher will have the opportunity to participate in
teaching and student supervision. There will also be opportunities to
collaborate (interdisciplinary) with other researchers in the cluster.

The salary and social benefits are according to Germany's public
sector TVL E13 scale, currently between 2.900 and 4.210 Euro per month
(before taxes), depending on formal qualification and professional
experience. Doctoral researchers will be employed on a part-time
position, and will have the opportunity of pursuing a doctoral degree
at Saarland University.

Saarland University is one of the leading European research sites in
Computational Linguistics. Close ties exist between the departments of
Computational Linguistics and Computer Science, the German Research Center
for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), and the two Max Planck Institutes for
Computer Science and Software Systems, all of which participate in the
newly formed cluster of excellence. With the creation of the cluster,
Saarland University is set to become an even more dynamic research
environment. Researchers come from all over the world and the research
language is English.

Please send your application (CV, brief statement of research interests,
list of publications if available, and 2-3 letters of reference) ideally
as a single PDF file to Caroline Sporleder at csporled at coli.uni-saarland.de
by September 30, 2008. The positions will remain open until filled, so later
applications may still be considered. Saarland University wishes to
increase the proportion of women in research and strongly encourages
qualified female candidates to apply. Priority will be given to
handicapped candidates with equivalent qualifications.
