Call for Participation: Unsupervised Morpheme Analysis -- Morpho
Challenge 2009 Workshop

In conjunction with: CLEF 2009 (Cross-Language Evaluation Forum)
30 September - 2 October, 2009
Corfu, Greece

http://www.cis.hut.fi/morphochallenge2009/

Chair: Mikko Kurimo (Helsinki University of Technology)

Morpho Challenge 2009 is part of the EU Network of Excellence PASCAL
Challenge Program and is organized in collaboration with CLEF.

*** Topic of the Challenge and Workshop ***

The objective of the Challenge was to design a statistical machine
learning algorithm that discovers which morphemes (smallest
individually meaningful units of language) words consist of. Ideally,
these are basic vocabulary units suitable for different tasks, such as
text understanding, machine translation, information retrieval, and
statistical language modeling.

The scientific goals are:
      * To learn of the phenomena underlying word construction in
natural languages
      * To discover approaches suitable for a wide range of languages
      * To advance machine learning methodology

Morpho Challenge 2009 is a follow-up to our previous Morpho Challenge
2005, 2007 and 2008. The task was again to find the morpheme analysis
of the word forms in the given data sets. For this challenge, new
Machine Translation tasks were added (from Finnish to English and from
German to English) to evaluate the performance of the morpheme analysis.

*** Competitions ***

The submitted algorithms were evaluated in three complementary ways:

      * Competition 1: The proposed morpheme analyses were compared to
a linguistic gold standard.
      * Competition 2: Information retrieval (IR) experiments were
performed, where the words in the documents and queries were replaced
by their proposed morpheme representations. The search is then based
on morphemes instead of words.
      * Competition 3: Statistical machine translation (SMT)
experiments were performed, where the word-based and morpheme-based
translations were combined for better performance.

The details of the tasks, evaluation results, and the descriptions of
the participating algorithms (accepted manuscripts) are available at
the workshop home page:

*** Further Information ***

The workshop will be held from 30 September to 2 October in Corfu,
Greece in conjunction with CLEF 2009 (Cross-Language Evaluation Forum).
The actual Morpho Challenge part lasts only one day (Sep 30), but the
same registration allows you to also participate in the other CLEF
tracks that follow immediately.
Please note that you are not obliged to also attend ECDL but can
register for the workshop only, if you prefer.
There is only a limited number of seats available, so please let us
know asap, if you are coming to the workshop.
