Heartfelt thanks to all who replied. It turned out that Audacity
(from Sourceforge.net) was good enough for my purposes. Other
suggestions were: Free Audio Editor, Praat, Matlab with Voicebox,
SoX, NCH Tools, Speech Filling System and UCL Enhance from UCL
and CoolEdit from Syntrillium (and its Adobe counterparts Adobe Audition
and Soundbooth).
