Dear List Members,
This is to let you know that we are starting an EPSRC research network on
Vision and Language (V&L Net) with the aim of bringing together
researchers from the fields of computer vision and language processing to
form new partnerships to address a range of computing challenges that lie
at the intersection of vision and language, including, for example,
language-based image/video retrieval and automatic labelling/description
of images and video. We attach a synopsis of the EPSRC Network on Vision
and Language (V&L Net) below.
V&L Net will issue quarterly newsletters reporting events, activities and
other news items. If you would like to receive this newsletter and be
kept up to date about V&L Net, please reply to this email (ticking the
relevant box below), and we will add your name to our newsletter mailing
list.
If you have existing or potential research interests in the topics covered
by V&L Net (see synopsis below for details) you may wish to consider
becoming a network member. V&L Net members' benefits will include the
following:
* participate in V&L Net events to find out about cutting-edge research in
V&L Net topics, and meet potential collaborators
* funding for attending V&L Net technical meetings and networking events
* apply for funding for visiting other V&L Net members (visits from or
to UK)
* access to online resources including software and data repositories
* organise your own V&L Net sponsored event
If you're interested in either of the above, simply reply to this email
ticking one or both of the following boxes.
[ ] Please add me to the V&L Net newsletter mailing list.
[ ] I may be interested in becoming a member, could you send me more
information about V&L Net.
Any comments and/or feedback would be very welcome.
With best wishes,
Anja Belz and Dimitrios Makris
V&L Net Synopsis:
Many of today's core computing research challenges (automatic
image/video description and language-based image/video retrieval among
many others) are located at the intersection of the fields of computer
vision (CV) and natural language processing (NLP). The premise of V&L
Net is that progress in these areas is currently being hampered by a
lack of collaboration between CV and NLP, and that in order to solve
key problems, expertise from both CV and NLP research must be brought
to bear. The core aim of the Vision and Language Network (V&L Net)
is to create a forum for researchers from the two fields to meet and
exchange ideas, expertise and technology while developing new
partnerships aimed at solving common challenges. To this end, V&L
Net will organise annual meetings with research presentations and
networking events, sponsor research workshops on specific network
themes, fund activities aimed at creating research proposals, and
create online repositories of information, data and software
resources.
