Research Associate - Natural Language Processing for Online Child Protection

Department of Computing

Ref: AA14

Salary: £24,877 - £28,839

Closing Date: 15 July 2009

Interviews expected to be week commencing 10 August 2009.

Applications are invited for an exciting research position in natural language processing in the Computing Department at Lancaster University. The focus of the post is on development of natural language analysis techniques and associated tools to analyse online social networking activities (e.g., chat room logs) to protect children against the predatory advances of paedophiles on the Internet. The successful candidate will join an ambitious research team with a longstanding record of work on natural language processing and its applications in software engineering for human-centred systems.

This position is funded through the Isis project on Protecting Children in Online Social Networks. The project, executed in collaboration with specialist UK law enforcement agencies, is jointly funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Economic and Social Sciences Research Council (ESRC). The aim of the project is to develop an ethics-centred monitoring framework and tools for supporting law enforcement agencies in policing online social networks for the purpose of protecting children. Natural language processing is at the heart of this monitoring framework in order to enable us to tackle two key challenges:

How to identify active paedophiles across online communities?

How to identify the core distributors of child abuse media?

The successful candidate must have a BSc or MSc in Computer Science or a closely related topic and post-graduate research experience in the area of natural language processing. A track record of research evidenced through publications or thesis/project work will be highly desirable. The candidates must also possess suitable software development skills and demonstrate the ability to work as part of a team as well as the capability to integrate diverse stakeholder needs into the design of the natural language processing tools to be developed.

Suitable candidates are encouraged to make informal enquires to the project coordinator Prof. Awais Rashid awais at comp.lancs.ac.uk and visit the Isis project web site at: http://www.comp.lancs.ac.uk/isis/.

The position is for 15 months. Expected start date for post: September 2009.
