SerenA: Chance Encounters in the Space of Ideas

SerenA is a £1.8M multidisciplinary project which will investigate the role of serendipity in the digital world. It is a consortium between six leading UK research institutions: Dundee, Lancaster, Heriott Watt, University College London, Goldsmiths College London and Nottingham.

A role for a (senior) research associate is available in Lancaster's Computing Department. The post holder will be responsible for developing and implementing new algorithms for supporting serendipitous connections in the digital world. The exact nature of the algorithms is not decided at this stage, but will be based around ontology extraction from textual documents and matching of ontologies across disciplinary boundaries, where "matching" here will incorporate a theory of serendipity. The post would therefore suit researchers with a background in ontologies, soft computing, data mining, and/or semantic web.
