LEXIS, THE STUDY OF LEXICON ACROSS CULTURAL IDENTITIES
AND TEXTUAL GENRES

International
Conference, University
 of Verona, 11-13 November
2010

Website: http://fermi.univr.it/lexis/index.html

Call for papers

Research on
dictionaries and foreign language textbooks generally focuses separately either
on specialized textual genres or on cultural issues, whereas so far only few
studies have joined the two aspects so as to focus on lexicon – be it general
or specialized – from a cultural perspective.
Yet all uses of a language, including those for special and teaching purposes, entail some cultural dimension.

Hence,
culture(s)-sensitive lexicographical tools are needed that enable speakers to
achieve the necessary cultural knowledge (including the awareness of the
diversities among cultural systems) to
communicate successfully in international settings, even for specific and
professional purposes – e.g., in domains such as business, institutional,
legal, media, medical, political, or tourist discourse.

The conference,
organized within the framework of the national research project “Dictionaries,
Language Materials and Words across Languages, Cultures and Ideologies”, aims
at shedding light on the relationship between lexicon and cultural heritage,
focusing on dictionaries, glossaries and textbooks.

Papers (20 mins + 10 mins
discussion) are invited, focusing on theoretical and methodological issues
concerning mainly

-
culture-bound terms in textbooks, dictionaries and
glossaries, be they monolingual, bilingual, multilingual, thesauri, visual and
specialized dictionaries;

-
borrowing, translation and coinage of new words
functioning as a means of correspondence between different linguistic and
cultural systems

-
relationships between lexicon and culture
particularly in the following fields: business - law - media – medicine – politics and institutions – tourism

The deadline for the submission
of abstracts (max 400 words) is 15 May 2010. Please indicate your
name, affiliation, snail mail and email address on the abstract and send it in

Notifications of acceptance will be sent out by 30 June 2010.
