Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a
position as researcher with the Digital Enterprise Research Institute
(DERI http://www.deri.ie) at the National University of Ireland, Galway
DERI is a leading research institute in semantic technologies that
offers a stimulating, dynamic and multi-cultural research environment,
excellent ties to research-groups worldwide, close collaboration with
industrial partners and up-to-date infrastructure and resources. The
Unit for Natural Language Processing (http://nlp.deri.ie/) has a focus
on applied research in ontology-based information extraction,
semantic-level text mining and the use of linguistic and semantic
methods in information retrieval. The eBusiness Unit
(http://deb.deri.ie/about) develops methods that support the application
of semantics to business information systems in the areas of content
analytics, uncovering and extracting meaning from business information
and the development of provenance based trust for business information
integration.
Research Role
The successful candidate will be a team member on the forthcoming
EU-funded FP7 project Monnet (Multilingual Ontologies for Networked
Knowledge) and will be expected to make significant contributions to
system architecture design and integration of advanced natural language
processing and semantic technology components for the purpose of Monnet
case study development in eBusiness and eGovernment. Given the research
oriented nature of the project, the successful candidate will be
actively encouraged to contribute as well to scientific dissemination of
project results via conference and journal publications and showcasing
of project demonstrators.

Essential Skills
Experience/Background in the following:
- Computational linguistics
- Strong core Java
- Knowledge/experience with web service design principles, development
and implementation
- Familiar with XML processing and related technologies
- Knowledge of object-oriented design principles and design patterns and
an understanding of their application within Java
- Third level degree in computational linguistics or computer science
related discipline
Desirable Experience & Background (inc. qualifications):
- Experience/Knowledge of document processing and search techniques
- Experience/Knowledge of scientific writing and publication
- Experience/Knowledge of Semantic technologies and standards
- A relevant post graduate degree (MSc, PhD) or relevant industrial
experience
The duration of the post will be for 1 year in the first instance, with
possible extension for a further 2 years.
Salary: €25,425 - €40,086 commensurate with qualifications and
experience. Start date: March 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter.
