The British Association of Applied Linguistics "Gender and Language" Special Interest Group is organising a 1 day event on the topic of GENDER AND CORPUS LINGUISTICS, to be held at Lancaster University on Tuesday March 30th, 2010.
Invited speakers include Cinzia Bevitori, Tony McEnery, Louise Mullany, Brona Murphy and Michael Pearce.
Corpus linguistics is a relatively new approach to language and gender, involving the use of large collections of electronically transcribed texts, which are subjected to computer enquiry as well as close human examination in order to derive representative patterns and trends. The recent book: Harrington, K; Litosseliti, L; Sauntson, H; Sunderland, J. (eds) Gender and Language Research Methodologies, has a section on corpus approaches.
Papers will aim to address the ways that corpus linguistics approaches can be utilised to aid research into language and gender. We will specifically be looking at research questions involving gendered usage/variation and gender representation. The former could be characterised by the question 'Are there
differences/similarities between male and female language use?', while the latter focuses on differences/similarities in the ways that males and females are represented via language.
Attendance is £20. For more information and to register for the event via our online shop, see:
