:: 1. ACL 2010 in Uppsala, Sweden

The 48th Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics will be held in Uppsala, Sweden, July 11-16, 2010. The conference will be organized by the Department of Linguistics and Philology at Uppsala University.
The conference will take place at Uppsala University Campus in a genuine university environment, dating back as far as 1477. The city also holds a rich history, having for long periods been the political, religious and academic center of Sweden. The proximity to the capital, Stockholm, provides additional benefits as a potential site for arranging both pre- and post-conference tours, as well as for excursions or tourism during the conference. The city of Uppsala is easy to reach by plane, train or car.

The Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) is the flagship conference for research on language and computation. The 48th Annual Meeting of the ACL (ACL 2010) seeks submission of papers on original and unpublished research in all area of computational linguistics, broadly conceived to include areas such as psycholinguistics, speech, information retrieval, multimodal language processing, and language issues in emerging domains such as bioinformatics. In addition, we want to stress that both theoretical, as well as practical and empirical papers, are sought for the conference.
ACL 2010 has the goal of a broad technical program. Thus, ACL 2010 invites papers in the following categories:
Research papers
- theoretical computational linguistics
- empirical/data-driven approaches
- paradigms/techniques/strategies
- analysis papers
- resources and evaluation
- applications/systems
- negative result (report of a sensible experiment or approach that failed to achieve the desired results)
Survey papers (new emerging area, field relevant to computational linguistics, etc.)
Position papers (we are particularly soliciting papers co-authored by two individuals with opposing positions, though single-authored papers are welcome)
Challenge papers (a challenge to the field in terms of setting out a goal for the next 5/10/20 years)

The Student Research Workshop is an established tradition at ACL conferences. The workshop provides a venue for student researchers investigating topics in Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing to present their work and receive feedback from a general audience. Participants will have the opportunity to present their work as a poster or as a 10-minute talk followed by a poster presentation.
We would like to invite student researchers to submit their work to the workshop. Since this workshop is an excellent opportunity to ask for suggestions, to receive useful feedback and to run your ideas by an international audience of researchers, the emphasis of the workshop will be on work in progress. The research being presented can come from any topic area within computational linguistics including, but not limited to, the following topic areas:
- pragmatics, discourse, semantics, syntax and the lexicon
- phonetics, phonology and morphology
- linguistic, mathematical and psychological models of language
- information retrieval, information extraction, question answering
- summarization and paraphrasing
- language generation
- speech recognition, speech synthesis
- corpus-based language modeling
- multi-lingual processing, machine translation, translation aids
- spoken and written natural language interfaces, dialogue systems
- multi-modal language processing, multimedia systems
- message and narrative understanding system

Funding for Travel
Funding is available to assist student participants with travel to Uppsala and conference expenses. Students whose papers are accepted for presentation at the workshop are eligible for travel assistance based on need. Further details will be provided along with the acceptance letters; however, in general a flat rate stipend will be awarded with the amount depending upon the student's location.

:: 7. Mentoring Service
=========================================================
ACL is providing a mentoring (coaching) service for authors from regions of the world where English is less emphasized as a language of scientific exchange. Many authors from these regions, although able to read the scientific literature in English, have little or no experience in writing papers in English for conferences such as the ACL meetings. The service will be arranged as follows. A set of potential mentors will be identified by Mentoring Service Chairs Björn Gambäck (SICS, Sweden and NTNU, Norway) and Diana McCarthy (Lexical Computing Ltd., UK), who will organize this service for ACL 2010. If you would like to take advantage of the service for a submission to the main conference, to the Student Research Workshop, to the system demonstration session, or to one of the workshops, please upload your paper in PDF format using the paper submission software for the mentoring service available at:

The deadline for the mentoring service is six weeks before the respective submission deadline. An appropriate mentor will be assigned to your paper and the mentor will get back to you no later than two weeks before the submission deadline.
Please note that this service is for the benefit of the authors as described above. It is not a general mentoring service for authors to improve the technical content of their papers.
