CFP: Parallel Corpora Across Fields: Bridging the Gaps
Theme Session within the framework of the 6th International Contrastive
Linguistics Conference (ICLC6), Berlin (Germany), September 30–October
2, 2010
http://www.ctw-congress.com/2010/ICLC6/
IMPORTANT DATES
Deadline for submission of abstracts: 15 April 2010
Acceptance notification: 15 May 2010
DESCRIPTION
The comparison of translated texts has always been an important method
in contrastive linguistics. As the compilation of large translation
corpora has become an attainable task, such corpora have come to be
widely used not only in contrastive linguistics, but also in other
disciplines such as computational linguistics, multilingual
lexicography, translation studies, glottodidactics, and language
typology. Yet, it seems researchers from these backgrounds often do not
know much about each other, and while parallel corpora exist for a large
number of languages, the potential of exploiting these resources as a
tool for language comparison in general has yet to be reached.
The purpose of the theme session is to invite researchers who work with
parallel corpora against various linguistic backgrounds for a fruitful
exchange of positions. It focuses on methodological issues as well as
novel research questions involving parallel corpora in language
comparison from different perspectives.
Topics include, but are not limited to:
- The exploration of quantitative methods for the analysis of
parallel corpora
- Issues of corpus annotation and corpus query utilities
- Properties and methodological implications of translated language
and language production in translation
- Limitations of parallel corpora and how to deal with them
- Methods and issues in the exploitation of parallel corpora for
studies in contrastive linguistics, intra- und interlanguage variation,
language typology, contact linguistics, translation studies and others.
