Description:
The Centre of Human Language Technology and Bioinformatics of the University of Beira Interior (http://hultig.di.ubi.pt) is advertising a 11 months scholarship for a PhD or excellent Master student in Informatics, Computer Science or Applied Mathematics. The selected candidate will work on the VIPACCESS project (Ubiquitous Web Access for Visually Impaired People) in collaboration with the University of Orléans in France and the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. In particular, research on Lexical Semantics, Distributional Analysis and Multi-view Clustering will be endeavored.

Tasks to be developed:
First, the candidate will have to apply new informative similarity measures to automatically extracted TOEFL-like test cases to extract candidate synonyms or hypernyms/hyponyms.
Second, a multi-view clustering process will have to be experimented to extract synonyms or hypernyms/hyponyms candidates. This work will be done in collaboration with the University of Orléans in France.
After these first studies are ready, the candidate will have to apply a new unsupervised methodology to extract multilingual synonyms or hypernyms/hyponyms pairs. This work will be done in collaboration with the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

Salary:
The scholarship amount is 980 euros/month (minimum salary in Portugal is around 400 euros).

Starting Date:
The position is supposed to start on the 10th of January 2011.
