The aim of the workshop is to bring together corpus-based cross-
linguistic work on discourse and multimodal communication from
cognitive and functional perspectives. Our purpose is to integrate and
synthesize a number of theoretical, applied and methodological
challenges arising from the cross-linguistic analysis of discourse,
focusing mainly, but not exclusively, on the following topics:
• Evidentiality and modality: discourse-pragmatic perspectives
The workshop welcomes recent cross-linguistic and corpus-based studies
on evidentiality and modality, focusing on issues of pragmatics and
discourse analysis. Epistemic modality pertains to speaker/writer’s
knowledge concerning the event, and thus involves estimations of the
likelihood of the realization of the event. Evidentiality pertains to
the sources of knowledge whereby information is acquired, and may thus
indicate speaker/writer’s attitude towards the validity of the
communicated proposition (Chafe & Nichols 1986; van der Auwera and
Plungian 1998; de Haan 1999; Dendale and Tasmowski 2001; Plungian 2001;
Carretero 2004; Marín-Arrese 2004; Aikhenvald 2004, inter alia).
• Evaluation and Stancetaking resources in discourse
The expression of beliefs, emotions, desires, or the way we align or
disalign with particular positions or information advanced by others in
social interaction has been studied under the various labels of stance,
affect, assessment, evaluation, or attitude and engagement within
Appraisal Theory (Ochs 1990, Biber and Finegan 1989; Thompson and
Hunston 2000; Martin and White 2005, inter alia). This workshop aims to
study the multifaceted nature of stance, focusing mainly on the
phenomena of evaluation, subjectivity, and positioning in discourse
(Martin and White 2005; Du Bois 2007; Englebretson 2007; Marín-Arrese
2009).
• Cohesion, staging and prominence in discourse
We welcome cross-linguistic studies showing a systematic variation
between two or more languages in the area of cohesion (Halliday and
Hasan 1976, Hansen-Schirra et al. 2007), staging (Grimes 1975) and
other perspectivizing strategies (Langacker 1990), as well as in the
behaviour of related categories such as Topic, Theme, Focus, Given &
New Information (Hasselgård et al. 2002; Lavid 2010; Lavid, Arús and
Moratón 2009; Lavid, Arús and Zamorano-Mansilla 2010; Hannay and
Martinez Caro 2008; Steiner 2005, inter alia).
• Multimodal communication.
Language rarely stands alone in written and spoken discourses, but it
usually combines with other semiotic systems in the creation of
multimodal documents (Bateman 2008; Ventola and Moya Guijarro 2009). We
are interested in crosslinguistic studies which analyse and highlight
the importance of cultural and social aspects in the use of
multisemiotic resources in documents using methods drawn from cognitive
and functional linguistics.

- All presentations will be 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for questions.
- Contributors interested in taking part in this workshop are kindly
invited to contact Julia Lavid (lavid at filol.ucm.es), Juana Marín
(juana at filol.ucm.es), and Erich Steiner (e.steiner at mx.uni-saarland.de),
and send their name, affiliation and a provisional title by 12 November
2010.
- If the present workshop proposal is accepted, abstracts should be
submitted to SLE, via the conference website (http: //sle2011.cilap.
es/) by 15 January 2011.
