Vacancy for researcher in Natural Language Processing
Natural Language Processing Research Group, Sheffield University

The Natural Language Processing group currently seeks a researcher to work on the identification of proper nouns from web pages. The successful applicant will develop a system to identify examples of proper nouns from web pages. Word Sense Disambiguation techniques will be applied to automatically distinguish between proper and common usages of nouns. The post is funded by a Google Research Award.

Applicants should have previous experience in Natural Language Processing and, ideally, be hold a postgraduate qualification in a relevant area. In addition, previous experience in any of the following would be an advantage:
- Information Extraction
- Word Sense Disambiguation
- using the web as a corpus
- using Mechanical Turk for linguistic annotation

The post is available from 1st March 2011 (or as soon as possible thereafter). The position can be offered on either a full or part time basis. The post is available as a full time position for 9 months; alternatively, the contract may be extended for a longer period if undertaken on a part time basis.
