Research Associate in Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning
(18 months)

Natural Language Processing Research Group
Department of Computer Science
University of Sheffield

Description of the post:

The overall objective of this research project is to develop new
techniques for statistical machine translation (SMT) between human
languages. The position is jointly funded by the EPSRC and the EU FP7
and aims to build better end-to-end models of automatic machine
translation. The project will focus on areas in which current
technologies underperform, namely a) languages and domains for which
there is limited parallel data and b) language pairs that are
structurally dissimilar. This research has the potential to greatly
increase the usefulness of machine translation by expanding the range
of languages that can be translated, and by generally improving
translation accuracy. The approach will build upon the PIs' existing
research into SMT, primarily on inducing phrase-based and word- based
string transducers using Bayesian non-parametrics.

The role will require the post holder to undertake research and
software development and to work with the PIs' doctoral students. This
is an opportunity to work in a well-connected international team with
world-leading reputations in both the Natural Language Processing
(NLP) and Machine Learning (ML) research groups at The University of
Sheffield.

You should have a PhD or be close to completion (or equivalent
experience) in a related area, experience of natural language
processing and experience in machine learning. The ability to write up
research findings for submission to peer-reviewed conference and
journals as well interpersonal and communication skills to present
findings locally and at conferences are essential. Experience in
statistical machine translation and advanced machine
learning (e.g., graphical models, Markov Chain Monte Carlo,
unsupervised inference) are desirable.

This post is fixed term until 30 November 2012.
