Research Associate Faculty of Computer Science & Technology Vacancy
Reference No: NR08990 Salary: £27,428-£35,788

Limit of tenure applies*

A short-term Research Associate position has become available on a joint
IARPA project with 4 US Universities (Columbia University, Michigan
University, University of Maryland, and University of Washington). Project
FUSE's aim is to detect emergent research ideas from the scientific
literature.

The project combines natural language processing, machine learning, and
citation analysis to detect the first mention of important ideas, and trace
their procession through time, both in linguistic expressions, citation
behaviour, and other textual and non-textual indicators. The texts processed
will be from several disciplines and several languages (Chinese, Russian,
and German). The part played by Cambridge University concerns coherence,
discourse structure and sentiment detection.

The appointee will be partially responsible for the implementation of a
sentiment detection module for citations, for the design and implementation
of a feature detector for machine learning and for domain adaptation across
scientific disciplines. They will also participate in the design of a
discourse annotation scheme, which will involve some manual annotation for
testing purposes. One responsibility of this position is to interface
Cambridge's tools with others in the project and with IARPA's network.

The successful candidate should have a proven research track record, a PhD
or comparable research experience in computational linguistics and have
programming skills in Java or C++.

The following criteria are highly desirable:

- experience with linguistic analysis, in particular discourse processing
such as reference resolution, rhetorical relations or sentiment detection.

- a knowledge of network analysis algorithms.

This post is intended to be filled as soon as practical after the closing
