Job announcement:
"Language Technologies Development Officer", (Computational
Linguist/Computer Scientist) - Senior Researcher, at the European
Academy Bolzano/Bozen, Italy

The Institute for Specialised Communication and Multilingualism of the
European Academy Bozen/Bolzano (EURAC) is looking for a full-time
"Language Technologies Development Officer" (Senior Researcher) to
manage and develop the relationships of the institute's computational
linguists with internal and external partners and stakeholders, in
regard to deploying and extending the institute's digital resources
(data and code) and to assist in strategic planning of computational
linguistic applications.
The Institute for Specialised Communication and Multilingualism
is concerned with research on terminology, translation, variety
linguistics and corpora as well as research related to sociolinguistics
and lexicography. Most of the research projects have a strong dependency
on computer technologies (databases, web services, software for
linguistic tasks, language representation and processing techniques,
content management systems, terminological tools, and translation
tools). Within each project the technological components are usually
designed and implemented by a project internal computer scientist or
computational linguist. In addition to the preceding projects, there is
also a research project concerning the visualization of linguistic data.
The position is one of two project-independent computational
positions. This position has an application/usage-centered focus, while
the other position has a more technical focus. The person filling the
announced position is responsible for guaranteeing the investigation and
incorporation of user requirements in all phases of the development and
deployment of the institute's digital resources such as data and
applications and for guiding respective decisions taken in the course of
single projects. It is her/his responsibility to maintain the general
orientation of the institute, in conjunction with the Language
Technologies Technical Officer, and to jointly take care that
developments in the course of new projects are conformant to and
compatible with the overall research direction of the Institute for
Specialised Communication and Multilingualism. The position has a strong
research component, and the ideal candidate will be able to lead the
project on the visualization of linguistic data.
S/he will also act as a bridge to communicate between the
Institute for Specialised Communication and Multilingualism and the
Information and Communication Technologies Department.

In addition s/he is invited and encouraged to actively
participate in the further development of projects, by contributing
ideas and taking on specific tasks.
Foreseen duties include:

* Investigate and integrate users' requirements into the development
process of language resources and tools
* Manage and develop relationships between the institute's
computational linguists with internal and external partners and
stakeholders
* Manage application code and code repositories
*  Supervise/guide/write technical documentation
* Formalize processes for major tasks such as metadata integration,
corpora production, evaluation processes etc.
* Contribute to the strategic planning of the Institute for Specialised
Communication and Multilingualism focusing on computational linguistic
applications
* Disseminate the institute's language and software resources
* Plan and offer (periodic) internal trainings about technological
issues (e.g. new tools)
* Active participation in scientific discourse (publication activities,
conferences, etc.)
* Seek out appropriate funding opportunities

Programming Competencies:
* Web UI programming (e.g., HTML, CSS, Flash/Flex, Javascript, etc.)
* Web CGI and web services programming (e.g., Java, Perl, PHP, Python,
etc.)
* Visualization toolkits (e.g. Prefuse, Protovis, etc.)
*  XML, XSL

The position will be for three years (1 + 2 years), with the possibility
of further renewal thereafter. Ph.D. or equivalent experience required.
