4 positions in folktale analysis, classification and clustering
***************************************************************

Applications are invited for two PhD-students, a post-doc researcher, and a scientific programmer. They will work on the automatic analysis, classification and clustering of Dutch folktales in a collaborative project within the Netherlands. The first PhD will work as part of the Tunes & Tales project, funded under the Computational Humanities programme of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). The others will work in the FACT project (Folktales As Classifiable Texts), funded under the CATCH programme of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Both are multidisciplinary research projects involving collaboration between computer science and humanities researchers. Because the research is focused on Dutch folktales, we expect the PhD-students and the postdoc to have at least passive knowledge of the Dutch language. For all positions, proficiency in Dutch is a plus.

1) The first PhD-student will work on the automatic detection of motifs in folktales, in the context of a project that investigates sequences of motifs in melodies as well as folktales, and their variability in oral transmission. More information and application:

2) The second PhD-student will work on automatic classification of folktales by their international folktale type and on unsupervised clustering of folktales, to provide new input for humanities research. More information and application:
http://www.utwente.nl/vacatures/?VacatureID=169016

3) The postdoc will work on the automatic annotation of folktales. This will involve language identification, keyword detection, named entity recognition, genre classification, and automatic summarization. More information and application:
http://www.utwente.nl/vacatures/?VacatureID=169024

4) The scientific programmer will create user-friendly annotation and visualization tools for folktale researchers that incorporate the annotation and clustering techniques developed by the postdoc and the second PhD student. In addition, the programmer will develop an XML-based search system that allows the general public to search for folktales based on their annotations. More information and application:
http://www.utwente.nl/vacatures/?VacatureID=169177

The team members in the FACT project (positions 2-4) will be employed at the University of Twente, but will spend most of their time "on site" at the Meertens Institute (http://www.meertens.knaw.nl), which maintains the large collection of folktales that is the main focus of the research in FACT (http://www.verhalenbank.nl). All team members will be part of the e-Laboratory on Oral Culture at the Meertens Institute. More vacancies for this lab can be found here: http://www.meertens.knaw.nl/cms/nl/vacatures-othermenu-334

The closing date for applications is 15 October 2011.
