--- PhD Scholarship in Natural Language Processing and Social Media, University of Bergen ---

Dept. of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen

The NTAP project, funded by the Norwegian Research Council, is offering a PhD scholarship in the area of natural language processing and social media analysis. This is an exciting and fast-growing field, both for academic research and for commercial applications.

The PhD research will consider how statements and opinions are expressed in blogs. This will be investigated through the automated induction of discursive structures, and the development of unsupervised methods to extract data about the occurrence of statements and opinions. This data will form part of visualizations to be developed by others in the project, in order to elucidate the social and epistemological contexts of information in social media, e.g. for general users seeking information, for social science research and for media monitoring companies interested in information diffusion .

The PhD student would be expected to extend the state-of-the art in one or more areas such as unsupervised information extraction, grammar induction, or natural language processing techniques for social media texts. There will be the opportunity for two month-long research visits to an internationally-leading research group in the UK.

The successful candidate will:
- have a Masters-degree in computer science, computational linguistics, information science, linguistics, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience;
- be fluent in Norwegian and English;
- have programming experience, e.g. Java, Python, or have experience with natural language processing toolkits such as NLTK, GATE;
- be independent, motivated and responsible, with an enthusiasm for research;
- be willing to work as part of a project team;
- be able to communicate research findings to different audiences, e.g. colleagues in project meetings, researchers at conferences and non-expert user groups.
