[Corpora-List] Two PhD students in Translation Technologies and Corpora

Two Ph.D. positions in Translation in the Research Group in Lexicography
and Translation of University of Málaga (Spain) directed by Prof. Gloria
Corpas. The positions are part of the Marie Curie Initial Training Network
EXPERT, concerned with the exploitation of empirical approaches to machine
translation, including statistical machine translation and example-based
machine translation.


The EXPERT project brings together researchers from six European
universities (University of Wolverhampton (UoW), University of Sheffield
(USFD), Universidad de Málaga (UMA), Universität des Saarlandes (USAAR),
Dublin City University (DCU) and Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) and five
translation services and technology providers (Pangeanic, Hermes,
Translated, Celer Soluciones and WordFast).
Description

Position 1: Investigation of translators’ requirements from translation
technologies (UMA, including 2-month visit to USFD, 1-month visit to
Pangeanic and 3-month visit to UvA)

Position 2: Collection and preparation of multilingual data for multiple
corpus-based approaches to translation (UMA, including 3-month visit to UoW
and 3-month visit to Translated).

Both PhD students are expected to:

• complete and defend a PhD thesis within the official appointment duration
of three years;
• regularly present intermediate research results at international
conferences and workshops, and publish them in proceedings and journals;
• collaborate with the other team and project members on common research
targets;
• collaborate with the researchers in other relevant parts of the EXPERT
project and the RGLT-UMA;
• assist in relevant teaching activities.

The full-time appointment will be on a temporary basis for a maximum period
of three years and should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis).

An educational plan will be drafted that includes attendance of courses and
(international) meetings.

The gross monthly salary will range from approx. 3,000 Euro to 3,300 Euro
(depending on the family situation).

The successful applicants will work under the daily supervision of Prof.
Gloria Corpas Pastor and Dr. Míriam Seghiri with opportunities for
collaborative work with other universities and industrial partners in the
consortium, and includes a total of 6 months’ secondment to 2-3 consortium
members based on the topic of research.
This is a great opportunity to work in a well-connected international team
of the leading universities and industrial partners.

The main focus of the appointment is on research, but also includes
moderate teaching duties in subjects relevant to the candidate's research
activities. The preferred starting date is 1 March 2013 or as soon as
possible thereafter.

Appointment will be subject to the eligibility requirements of the Marie
Curie programme, which specify that:
- Early stage researchers must be, at the time of recruitment, in the first
four years of their research careers, measured from the date when they
obtained the qualification which would entitle them to embark on a
doctorate.
- As per Marie Curie Terms and Conditions, researchers must not have
resided in Spain for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior
to the appointment.
