The University of Luxembourg seeks to hire an excellent PhD candidate in 
the field of Text Mining.

  - PhD candidate (M/F)
  - Ref: F1-070090 (to be mentioned in all correspondence).
  - 3-years fixed-term contract, 40h/week.
  - Student and Employee status.

* General
The selected candidate will be working within the ILIAS Laboratory, 
Dept.of Computer Science and Communication (MINE research group). A 
prospective start is foreseen for the second quarter of 2013. A hard 
deadline for applications is set to January 15, 2013. The University is

* Description of the Position
Text mining in general refers to the linguistic exploration of texts. It 
involves a process of structuring a text to discover hidden, but useful, 
patterns. Typically, this is achieved by an interplay of diverse 
research fields, like for example Computational Linguistics, Machine 
Learning, and/or Statistics. The goal of the candidate's research will 
therefore be the conception and implementation of techniques to support 
the evaluation of texts. In particular, directional relations between 
text fragments is focus of research (Text Entailment). The candidate 
will actively contribute to ongoing research projects, for example on 
identifying interaction profiles on chat corpora and/or on feature 
selection, sentiment classification and topic finding in Thomson Reuters 
Financial news data.

Profile for PhD position
  - The candidate holds a Master's degree or equivalent in Computer 
Science, Computational Linguistics or a comparable field.
  - Good programming skills in C/C++ or other.
  - Excellent skills in 2 of the following fields: Text Mining, Text 
Entailment, Machine Learning, Massive Text Management.

The candidate must be fluent in both written and spoken English. A 
collaborative and team-oriented attitude of work is expected as well as 
a predisposition for interdisciplinary research. The selected candidate 
is member of the Doctoral School on Computer Science and Engineering. 
The candidate agrees in supporting teaching activities.
