Fully funded PhD and Postdoctoral research positions in Computational
Linguistics and Spoken Language Translation are available at the Human
Language Technology Center at HKUST. The program offers numerous close
collaboration opportunities with other top international research
institutions, including our US and European partners in the DARPA BOLT
and EU-BRIDGE research projects.
PhD scholars will undertake work leading to a dissertation in the
Department of Computer Science & Engineering, with their research
relating to one or more of various fast-moving areas pioneered at
HKUST:
- semantic models in statistical machine translation
- syntax and structure in statistical machine translation
- machine learning of syntactic and semantic models
HKUST is a young, energetic, highly ranked American style research
university offering a very international English-language intellectual
environment, situated on a beautiful waterfront campus in one of the
most cosmopolitan and vibrant hub cities of dynamic Asia.
GRANTS Each student will receive a starting stipend of HK$150,000 per
year (approximately US$19,250), rising after qualifying exams to
HK$160,000 (approximately US$20,500). Graduate students are eligible
for on-campus housing. The program offers generous laboratory,
library, and dedicated HLTC computation server cluster facilities.
REQUISITES The successful candidate will be capable of independent,
creative and careful critical thinking, possess strong communication
skills, and be self-motivated. A strong undergraduate or Masters
background is expected in a relevant area, such as computer science,
computational linguistics, artificial intelligence, machine learning,
statistics, pattern recognition or information theory. Strong
programming skills are essential.
