Hi,
Many real-world concepts have associations with colours. For example, iceberg is associated with white, vegetation with green, danger with red, and so on. The NRC word-colour association lexicon is a list of English words and the colours they are most associated with. The lexicon has associations with 11 colours (white, black, red, green, yellow, blue, brown, pink, purple, orange, and grey). These are the same colours studied by Berlin and Kay in Basic Color Terms: Their Universality and Evolution (1969). The annotations were done manually through Amazon's Mechanical Turk for more than 14,000 common English words.
The lexicon is available for use through a research license. If you are interested in obtaining a copy of the lexicon, then send an email to: saif.mohammad at nrc-cnrc.gc.ca. Please put "NRC word-colour association lexicon" in the subject line. You can simply reply to this email too, but please do not respond to the whole list as that will inconvenience others.
Details of the lexicon can be found in the following peer-reviewed publications:
-- Even the Abstract have Colour: Consensus in WordColour Associations, Saif Mohammad, In Proceedings of the 49th Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics: Human Language Technologies, June 2011, Portland, OR.
-- Colourful Language: Measuring Word-Colour Associations, Saif Mohammad, In Proceedings of the ACL 2011 Workshop on Cognitive Modeling and Computational Linguistics (CMCL), June 2011, Portland, OR.
Best wishes.
Saif
PS: If you had requested for the NRC *emotion* lexicon in the last few weeks, and if you did not get my response, then please send me another note. It is possible that because a number of people were emailed (bcc'ed) at the same time, the mail may have been caught in a spam filter.
