Scientific Software Engineer "A Web-based Annotation Platform" at
Technische Universitaet Darmstadt, Germany
The Ubiquitous Knowledge Processing (UKP) Lab (Technical University of
Darmstadt, Germany) has an opening for a scientific software engineer to
create a web-based platform for linguistic annotations. The goals of
this project are: a well-engineered server back-end for an existing
web-based annotation front-end, and designing a connection to
crowdsourcing platforms for linguistic annotations. The position is
ideal for individuals who have just completed their studies and aim to
collect work experience in a highly productive, dynamic scientific work
environment before moving on to a scientific or an industry career.
This project is part of CLARIN-D, funded by BMBF. CLARIN-D provides
linguistic data, tools and services in an integrated, interoperable and
scalable infrastructure for the social sciences and humanities, and is
highly visible in Germany and within the European Union. Funding is
expected to be available for 1 year, starting from September 1st, 2012.
Filling the position depends on the availability of funds. The payment
follows the German public scale and depends on the qualification of the
candidate. Part-time employment is possible.
The ideal candidate should have a strong background in computer science
and/or computational linguistics (M.Sc. or B.Sc) and demonstrate very
good skills in software engineering. Previous work experience with one
of the themes mentioned above is a definite asset, but is not an
absolute requirement. Further, we expect excellent communication skills
and the ability to work in a distributed team environment.
Requirements: - strong programming skills in Java; - knowledge of web
technologies such as HTML, CSS, AJAX, Javascript; - experience with
XML-based exchange formats.
A plus: - experience with language technology, especially UIMA -
experience with relational databases, especially MySQL, JPA - previous
open source software projects
The focus of UKP Lab (see www.ukp.tu-darmstadt.de) is on semantic
information management, computational analysis of user generated
content, and applied lexical semantic processing. The group features a
dynamic work environment, a highly motivated and integrated research
team, a substantial industrial cooperation network, and was
distinguished by several research awards for fundamental research since
its establishment in summer 2006. Darmstadt is located in the southern
part of the Rhine Main Area, which hosts one of the strongest
IT-Clusters in Germany. The city has a preferable location in the center
of Germany: not even half an hour away from the Rhine-Main International
Airport in Frankfurt.
Interested candidates should send their application (CV, certificates,
references to software projects) to Prof. Dr. Chris Biemann and Prof.
Dr. Iryna Gurevych (preferably by email: biemann (at) ukp (dot)
informatik (dot) tu-darmstadt (dot) de). Please direct your inquiries
regarding this posting to the same address.
Application deadline: May 21, 2012. Later applications will be
considered as long as the position is not filled. Upon consideration,
you will be asked to complete a programming assignment.
