e-History and the Biography Portal of the Netherlands                                              

The Biography Portal of the Netherlands at the Huygens Institute for the History of the Netherlands links a wide variety of Dutch online reference works and data sets, written in different times and from different perspectives, through a limited number of metadata. BiographyNed, a programme of VU University, Huygens/ING Institute and the Netherlands e-Science Centre, funded by the Netherlands e-Science Centre, will enhance the research potential of this Biography Portal, by developing a demonstrator adding a semantic layer to the portal. For this programme the VU is seeking:

Post-doctoral researcher f/m
Computational Linguist

For  0,7 fte

Tasks
The computational linguist in the team will develop technology for the extraction of events and story lines from textual descriptions related to the Biography portal (mostly in Dutch and possibly also in English), such as involvement of people in political, military and/or socio-cultural activities. The PostDoc will develop software to determine duplicate and alternative event descriptions and define what different perspectives are expressed on the same event. Furthermore, descriptions of distinct events involving the same people are combined through temporal and causal relations.

Requirements
*PhD in computer science or linguistics with language-technology skills;
*Expertise on natural language processing in general and semantic processing of text, specifically in processing events, participants, named-entities and event-participant relations;
*Experience with the processing of Dutch text and Dutch language technology tools;
*Fluent in English, preferably also in Dutch;
*Output oriented;
*Good team player in a team of humanities and computer science scholars as well as museum staff; prepared to collaborate with and support students, PhD researchers and historians.

Further particulars
The initial appointment will be for a period of  12 months. After satisfactory evaluation of the initial

Salary
The salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel, and amounts 
€ 2.042,- gross per month in the first year up to € 2.612,- in the fourth year (salary scale 85) based on a full-time employment.
