[Corpora-List] Jobs: Research Assistant/associate and (Web) Programmer in Machine Translation

These two positions are available in the Department of Chinese, 
Translation and Linguistics, City University of Hong Kong, in the GRF 
project "Developing Language Resources and Facilities to Enhance the 
Automation of Bilingual Legal Drafting in HK" (PI: Dr. Chunyu Kit) 
funded by the Research Grant Council of HKSAR. The project is aimed at 
utilizing and developing Web mining and machine translation technologies 
to facilitate bilingual legal drafting in the context of Hong Kong, 
where two official languages are accorded equal status.


1. Senior Research Assistant / Research Associate (1.5-2 years)

Duties: Bilingual resource acquisition via web mining, text alignment 
and interaction with users of an online bilingual editing platform, and 
the development and evaluation of the platform.

Requirements: A Master's degree/PhD in Computational Linguistics, 
Machine Translation or related disciplines with strong experience in web 
mining and machine translation (esp. text alignment). Strong skills and 
experience with database and web programming (using Java/JavaScript, 
Servlet, JSP, AJAX and/or other commonly-used web programming 
languages). Basic knowledge of legal terminology. Strong publication 
records preferred. Good interpersonal and communication skills, and good 
command of written and spoken English and Chinese are required.


2. (Web) Programmer I/II (1.5-2 years)

Duties: Develop of dynamic web interface for an online bilingual editing 
platform supported by a large scale bilingual knowledge base, and 
perform any other duties as assigned.

Requirements: A good honours degree/Master's degree in Computer Science, 
Computational Linguistics or related disciplines with at least 2 years' 
relevant experience.  Professional skills and strong experience in web 
programming with Java/JavaScript, Servlet, JSP, AJAX and other 
commonly-used web programming languages and in large scaled data 
handling (including text mining and efficient test processing).  Basic 
knowledge of legal terminology and machine translation.  Good 
interpersonal and communication skills, and good command of written and 
spoken English and Chinese are required.  Candidates with less 
experience may be considered for appointment as Programmer II.


Conditions of Service
Fringe benefits include leave, medical and dental consultations at the 
campus clinic.

Other information: The PI's research group is a small one, achieving 
quite some top rankings in a number of shared tasks /evaluation 
exercises (incl. Chinese word segmentation bakeoff, CoNLL shared task on 
syn./sem. dependency parsing, Chinese parsing evaluation and a few 
others) and holding the best performance records in Chinese word 
segmentation and parsing (both Chinese and English). We are expecting 
high caliber researchers to join us in our pursuit of excellence.
