Job Reference Number: UOS006366
Contract Type: Fixed-term for 24 months
Faculty: Faculty of Engineering
Department: Department of Computer Science
Salary: Grade 7 £28,685 - £36,298 per annum.
Closing Date: 13 May 2013

The Department of Computer Science has a position for a Research
Associate in Natural Language Processing. The position is supported by
two externally funded research projects:

1. The Visual Sense (VISEN) project (www.chistera.eu/projects/visen),
funded by the EPSRC as part of the CHiST-ERA programme.
2. The Terminology as a Service (TaaS) project (www.taas-project.eu/)
funded by the European Commission as part of FP7.

The VISEN project is a multi-site, multi-disciplinary project involving
researchers in computer vision, machine learning and natural language
processing. It aims to advance the state-of-the-art in image
understanding by moving beyond current keyword-based image annotation to
derive semantic image representations that can be used to generate more
informative sentence-based image annotations.

The TaaS project is a multi-site project that aims to deliver a
cloud-based multi-lingual terminology service for human translators to
assist them in the task of translating technical documents. The balance
of work across the two projects is flexible and will be determined by
the skills and interests of the successful applicant.

Given the projects’ aims, a strong background in natural language
processing (NLP)/computational linguistics (CL) is essential, as is
knowledge of machine learning based techniques as used in NLP/CL. Strong
Programming skills in Java and Python are also essential. Experience
with some or all of the following specific sub-areas in NLP/CL is
desirable: information extraction/text Mining, Machine translation, NL
generation/Summarisation. The successful candidate will have a strong
publication track record and experience with multi-site collaborative
projects.

This is an opportunity to work in a well-connected international team
with a world-leading reputation in Natural Language Processing at The
University of Sheffield. The NLP group is well known internationally for
its research, and is one of the largest research groups in computational
linguistics and text engineering in the UK.

This post is fixed-term for 24 months, in the first instance.
