The English Linguistics Group at RWTH Aachen University invites
applications for a three year part-time PhD student position (TV-L 13 65
%) in the field of computational linguistics and corpus-based
translation studies (English-German).
RWTH Aachen University is one of Europe’s leading institutions for
science and research and is continuously ranked among Germany’s top
universities. It has been awarded funding for all three funding lines of
Germany’s Excellence Initiative. Its Institutional Strategy aims at
developing the scientific profile as an integrated, interdisciplinary,
and international university of technology.
English linguistics is part of this vibrant environment fostering
interdisciplinary research. The group is a young and dynamic team that
conducts research in all areas of computer-oriented English linguistics
with an emphasis on functional approaches. One of our research topics is
multilingual text production and especially translation.
Methodologically, our corpus-based research focuses on multi-layer
annotation including the annotation of various forms of non-canonical
language data such as intermediate versions during the text production
process. We closely cooperate with computer scientists and
psycholinguists in combined corpus-based and experimental studies.
The PhD position is within the project TRICKLET (Translation Research in
Corpora, Keystroke Logging and Eye-Tracking), which is funded by the
German Research Foundation (DFG). The new member of the team is expected
to conduct research within corpus-based translation studies.
Prerequisites are a Master degree or equivalent either in computational
linguistics or related fields. We expect a solid background in
linguistic research and corpus-based methods.
The tasks will include compilation and annotation of an English-German
keystroke logging corpus, as well as development of querying techniques.
Solid programming skills are required, experience in statistical
analyses and knowledge of the fields of translation studies, contrastive
linguistics or multilingualism are desirable. A good command of English
and German are mandatory.
Salary: level 13 according to German scale TV-L system
Duration: up to three years
Starting date: 15 October 2013
Application deadline: 23 August 2013
Applications should include a statement of research and teaching
interests, CV, copies of academic degree certificates and a list of
publications.
RWTH Aachen University has been certified as a "Family Friendly
