CULTURES AND LITERATURES IN TRANSLATION CONFERENCE
                                      December 5th – 6th, 2013

The 1st International Conference Cultures and Literatures in Translation aims to bring together scholars, translators of literature and practitioners from different backgrounds who are particularly sensitive to the cross-cultural and literary issues in translation. Our chief aim is to promote the exchange of ideas and to explore, beyond stereotypes, key concerns associated with rendering cultures and literatures in translation.

In the age of globalization when boarders of all kinds are gradually melting down translators and interpreters play a crucial role in bringing together ‘small’ and ‘big’, ‘central’ and ‘peripheral’ cultures. They may greatly contribute to our better understanding of different cultures and literary text or, quite to the contrary, deepen prejudices and mistrust. Thus, we hope that the Cultures and Literatures in Translation conference will become a new and exciting platform for the discussion of translators as transmitters of cultures and literatures and their roles in promoting, shaping or even writing and rewriting cultural and literary texts.

The Conference will prioritize (but will not be limited to) the following areas:

CULTURES IN TRANSLATION

The effects of globalization on translating culture
Popular culture in AVT translation
The reflection of the demands of local cultures and identities in translation
Periphery cultures in translation
The role of translators in helping individuals to understand remote cultures
The politics of cultural translation
Translation as the transmission of culture
Cultural construction of the image of writers and texts through translation

LITERATURES IN TRANSLATION

      Minority literatures in translation
Literatures of the English speaking countries: translation and appropriation

The role of literary translation in reinforcing cultural differences
History and reception of literary translation
Definitions of literary translation
The role of translation in constructing literary canons
The translator as a writer
Literature and literary adaptations in AVT translation
Literary and cultural translation in European Universities
