The Institute for Communication Science and Media Research (IfKW), Prof.
Dr. Fröhlich at Ludwig Maximilian University Munich, invites outstanding,
highly motivated graduates to apply for the following position:

Doctoral Researcher (f/m)
50% position, TV-L 13, for 2 ½ years, from March/April 2014

The position focuses on the development and application of quantitative
methods of content- and text analysis. It is part of a larger project
team, involving 9 European universities and research institutions,
conducting an EU-funded research project on the role of media in conflict.
Within this project, one group of researchers conducts a large scale,
quantitative analysis of dynamic news media contents related to violent
conflicts. The advertised position is affiliated with this part of the
project, and provides part of its methodological foundations. Candidates
are encouraged to conduct their PhD based on their research within this
project.

Suitable candidates should

- hold a university degree (MA or equivalent) in the Social Sciences,
Computer Science, or Computational Linguistics
- command wide experience in the application of quantitative research
methods and statistics
- have some experience in social scientific empirical research
- working knowledge in computer programming (experience in Python is
desirable)
- show a profound interest in the development of computer-assisted
strategies for text analysis in a scientific context
- possess excellent English communication skills, and at least basic
German language skills
- be prepared to spend some part of the project duration at the partner
institutions in Athens, Jerusalem, and Madrid

The candidate is expected to

- contribute actively to the development of methodological approaches to
automated text-analysis in a social scientific context
- collaborate with the entire, multinational research team, specifically
the researchers involved in the analysis of conflict-related news and
social media contents
- assist the team in the algorithmic implementation and programming of
computer-assisted text analysis routines
- collaborate with the entire team in the statistical analysis of obtained
data (basic prior knowledge of time series analysis or similar is
desirable, but not required)
- participate in the team’s publication activities, and present advances
from her/his work at international conferences
The department and project consortium provides the candidate with

- an international, excellent research environment within a large, EU
funded, innovative, collaborative research project
- collaboration with and supervision by experienced researchers in social
scientific, quantitative text analysis, statistical data analysis, and
semantic network analysis
- access to large scale content analytic data, and integration with other
research tasks within the project
- a generous budget for research-related travelling (visiting project
partners, attending conferences, project meetings) and other
research-related expenses
