Job Announcement. Computational Linguists (PhDs and PostDocs)

The VU University Amsterdam is looking for ambitious and talented researchers, a scientific programmer and
a project manager to take up the challenge of training computers to understand text. We will launch 4
research projects in 2014 within the Spinoza framework Understanding of language by machines (ULM).  We
develop computer models that assign deeper meaning to written text to approximate human understanding
and to use these models to automatically read and understand these texts. Current approaches to natural
language understanding consider language as a closed-world of relations between words. Words and text
are however highly ambiguous and vague. People do not notice this ambiguity when using language within
their social communicative context. This project tries to get a better understanding of the scope and
complexity of this ambiguity and to model the social communicative contexts in computer models to help
resolving it.
