The Department of Linguistics at the Faculty of Human Sciences of the University of Potsdam is seeking to fill the following position:
Academic staff member (Post-doc)
to be part of the research group on theoretical computational linguistics (Prof. Dr. Alexander Koller). The hours of work per week for the position amount to 40 hours. Applications will be processed immediately. Work should ideally start no later than October 2013. The position is initially limited to two years and can be extended. The salary scale is 13 TV-L (Area East).
The candidate should hold, or be about to complete, a PhD in computational linguistics, computer science, or a related field, have proven expertise in statistical methods in CL, and should be willing to take an active role in the group's research activities. Possible areas of specialization include semantics, parsing, generation, and dialogue. In exceptional cases, a recent MSc graduate might be hired as a PhD student instead.
The position includes four hours of teaching per week on introductory and specialized topics in computational linguistics. Although it is not a strict requirement, the ability to teach in German is a plus.
The computational linguistics group in Potsdam is part of the Department of Linguistics and the university's designated Area of Excellence in Cognitive Sciences. It provides a dynamic and international research environment and maintains close ties with the departments of computer science and psychology. The department offers a BSc in Computational Linguistics, which is taught in German; an MSc (taught in English) is in preparation.
The University of Potsdam is a young, modern, and research-oriented university with roughly 20,000 students. It is set in one of the most scenic environments of any research institution in Germany. Potsdam is the historical residence of the German emperors, and is part of the Berlin metropolitan area, one of the cultural and scientific capitals of the world. The city of Berlin is within commuting distance, and many researchers and students choose to live there.
