The *Blue Brain Project,* led by *Prof. Henry Markram,* is looking for an
experienced
* Section Manager for Data Mining *
to strengthen its Neuroinformatics team.
The Blue Brain Project is creating an informatics platform for large-scale
neuroscience data integration, analysis, modeling and simulation to serve
the scientific community. The Section Manager for Data Mining brings
leadership and scientific expertise to an important new effort in the
Neuroinformatics Division of the Blue Brain Project to mine existing data
and literature for neuroscientific knowledge, parameters and constraints
and integrate these into semantically organized and spatially navigable 3D
brain atlases.
The goals of the Data Mining Section are: 1) To develop software to mine
and extract facts and assertions from existing data and literature, 2) To
use this tool to analyze and mine key datasets and databases, 3) To
populate semantically organized, spatially navigable 3D brain atlases with
the results of the data mining process.
* Specific responsibilities include: *

- Lead, organize and manage the activity and a team of researchers and
engineers related to the mission of Data Mining Section, including: mining
external biomedical and neuroscience literature and datasets for data,
metadata, parameters and rules.
- Coordinate, implement and manage third-party projects in data mining.
- Define the scientific and technical roadmap of the BBP Data Mining
Section in accordance to the project’s and division’s objectives and
roadmaps.
- Coordinate, devise and oversee scientific and technical implementation
of the BBP’s data mining roadmap and related activities.
- Participate in the architecting and implementation of data mining
software components
- Helps organize project plans, identify key milestones and objectives,
prepare for external scientific review and assists in identifying and
managing key technology and collaborative partnerships.
- Hire, coordinate and evaluate subordinate personnel in the Data Mining
Section.
- Represent the BBP data mining efforts in technical and scientific
contexts.
- Support othersections on the topic of data mining and adoption of data
mining technology.

* Essential skills and experience required: *
- Strong experience in programming (Python, Java, MATLAB, R).
- Experience in machine learning, data classification, statistical
analysis in the bio-medical domain.
- Experience in coordinating local and remote research and development
across a diverse team.
* Preferred: *
* *
- In depth knowledge of existing biomedical data analysis initiatives.
- In depth knowledge of standard and cutting edge machine learning tools
and methods.
- Experience working with experimentalists and/or modelers.
- Familiarity with multi-objective optimization methods and incremental
support vector machines.
- Familiarity with natural language processing frameworks.
* Profile: *
- PhD in Neuroinformatics, BioInformatics, Computer Science or
Equivalent.
- 5 years experience in machine learning, statistical analysis,
classification, or related.
- Good team player and fluent English in speech and writing.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written and oral.
- Proven ability to work both independently and in team-based
environments.
