Full Professor
Teaching English as a Second Language and Applied Linguistics

The English Department at Iowa State University is seeking a full Professor in Teaching English as a Second Language and Applied Linguistics to serve as the Director of the Intensive English and Orientation Program (IEOP).  This faculty position will have a tenure home in the Department of English and will contribute to the teaching mission in the IEOP and in the Department of English. 

The new Director of the IEOP will lead the program in continuing the process toward accreditation through the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA) and create a national model for language learning research and practice in higher education. The Director will also lead an outstanding group of lecturers and teaching assistants in an intensive English program whose commitment to the use of technology and research in teaching makes it central to the graduate programs in applied linguistics.   

Undergraduate teaching will include courses in English and ESL.  Graduate courses may include second language teaching methods, computer-assisted language learning, second language assessment, second language acquisition, and applied linguistics research methods, according to specialty. The successful candidate should be knowledgeable about international trends in language education and committed to recruiting and making cross-disciplinary connections.  Research areas in TESL/applied linguistics are open but the successful candidate will be a productive scholar with national and international visibility.  

Required qualifications include a PhD in Applied Linguistics or related field; outstanding record of publications, scholarship, and teaching to support an appointment at the Professor level consistent with the University's standards.  Experience in teaching English as a second language and applied linguistics and in supervising graduate student research.  Experience in leadership and management of staff.

Preferred qualifications include a record of attracting external funding; experience with technology for language learning; demonstrated knowledge of a language other than English; experience in cross-cultural business and institutional agreements; a vision for leadership of an IEOP, knowledge of trends in language education, and experience recruiting for an intensive language program.
