(Unisa) is inviting outstanding candidates for Postdoctoral Researcher
positions in the fields of natural language processing/ natural
language technologies/computational linguistics/semantic computing to
collaborate in a project on Sustainable Multilingualism in the South
African Context.
The candidate should have a doctoral degree in computer science or a
related discipline, with specialisation in any one of the following or
closely related fields: natural language processing (NLP), natural
language technologies, computational linguistics, corpus linguistics,
or machine learning. Experience in the use of functional programming
in NLP applications and computational grammar development,
specifically in GF (Grammatical Framework) or knowledge of an African
language will be an advantage.
The successful candidates will be expected to collaborate in an
interdisciplinary environment where the focus is on research,
development and deployment of   computational approaches towards
sustainable multilingualism in the South African context. The
candidates will form part of a team of researchers involved in
innovative work towards realising multilingual support for ten of the
eleven official languages of South Africa. The expectation is that the
candidate's work would increase the international reputation of the
research group and the institution through world-class research,
publications and applications through collaborations with team members
and other researchers, as appropriate, and that it would also

Subject: [Corpora-List] Job: Oxford, UK, for Computational Linguist to
        work on Oxford Children's Corpus

Applications are invited for the post of Research Assistant in the
Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford, in
collaboration with the Department of Education and the Department of
Computer Science. The appointee will have expertise in computational
linguistics and will work on a research programme entitled ?Using the
Oxford Children?s Corpus to explore children's literacy development: an
inter-disciplinary approach?.

   - full time
   - 12 months appointment
   - closing date: 3rd October 2013 (Noon, BST)
   - interviews: week beginning 31 October 2013

We hope the appointee will be able to take up the post in early January
2014, or as soon as possible thereafter.

It is expected that the appointee will have an undergraduate qualification
in a relevant subject (e.g., Psychology, Computer Science, Linguistics) and
a post-graduate qualification to at least Masters-level in a relevant
topic.  They will have expertise in analysing large corpora to explore
linguistic phenomena. ****

The appointee is expected to take the lead in delivering the programme of
research, working with the Principal Investigators:


   - Professor Kate Nation (Department of Experimental Psychology),
   - Dr. Victoria Murphy (Department of Education)
   - Professor Stephen Pulman (Department of Computer Science).

The Oxford Children?s Corpus is a large, representative corpus of
children?s written language, comprising many millions of words, sampled
from material written for children (including fiction, curriculum material,
websites, magazines) and by children themselves.  It is has been developed
by Oxford University Press. This project will use the corpus to examine a
variety of lexical phenomena including

   - the identification of features of children?s reading experience that
   might relate to reading development, in particular, contextual diversity
   and semantic similarity and
   - the examination of collocation patterns in children?s own writing.

Responsibilities/duties

1. Work collaboratively with the Principal Investigators, their research
groups and with Oxford University Press.

2. Devise methods for analysing the corpus so as to address research
questions.

3. Analyse data and prepare reports detailing findings.

4. Assist with the general administration of the project.

5. Contribute to and assist with organising a seminar series associated
with the project.

6. A willingness to collect and analyse behavioural data to complement
corpus data.
Selection criteria Essential

1. An undergraduate qualification (2.1 or above, or equivalent) in a
relevant subject such as Psychology, Computer Science,
Linguistics.

2. A postgraduate qualification to at least Masters level in a relevant
subject.

3. An understanding of computational linguistics, machine learning
techniques and corpus analysis.

4. Experience in using corpus tools such as the IMS corpus workbench.

5. Experience with one or more scripting languages (e.g. Perl, Python),
preferably in a Linux environment.

6. An understanding of experimental design and statistics.

7. An interest in understanding lexical processing, language development
and related theoretical topics.

8. A publication and dissemination record commensurate with stage of career.
Desirable

1. A PhD in a relevant subject.

2. Expertise in psycholinguistics, especially with respect to written
language and its development.
