Corpus Approaches to Evaluative Language: special session at PALC
conference
[Practical Applications of Language Corpora, University of Lodz, Poland,
20-22 November 2014]

http://palc.uni.lodz.pl/

For the past several years, there have been many attempts to study the
linguistic mechanisms employed by speakers and writers to convey their
personal feelings and assessments. Such investigations have been carried
out using a wide range of conceptual and theoretical approaches, including
appraisal (e.g. Martin and White 2005), stance (e.g. Biber 2006),
metadiscourse (e.g. Hyland and Tse 2004), modality (e.g. Palmer 1987),
sentiment (e.g. Tabouada and Grieve 2004), evaluative, attitudinal or
affective language (e.g. Ochs 1989), evidentiality (e.g. Chafe and Nichols
1986) and evaluation (e.g. Hunston 1994; 2011).
Increasingly, corpus approaches have become adopted to investigate the uses
of evaluative language in specific contexts. These have been conducted
primarily as sentiment analysis, the analysis of stance and CADS
(corpus-assisted discourse studies). Evaluative language has also been
explored from the phraseological perspective with patterns of meaning
placed at the centre of scholarly attention. Invariably, questions have
been posed concerning the extent to which corpus analytical techniques can
be meaningfully used to explore evaluation of the more implicit or
conceptual type, where no overt linguistic clues have been employed.
This special conference theme has been envisaged to showcase research into
different types of evaluative meanings carried out using corpus linguistics
traditions. In particular, we hope to attract papers addressing the
following themes (some of which, we believe, have received rather scant
attention):
• corpus-based vs. corpus-assisted studies of evaluative language;
• the local grammar of evaluation;
• the role of phraseology in the evaluative act;
• evaluation in discourse communication, esp. institutional discourse
(medical, legal, economic, sociopolitical, etc.);
• evaluation in social media;
• cross-language studies of evaluation;
• evaluation and irony
• evaluation and discourses of socially sensitive issues (anti-Semitism,
racism, xenophobia, etc.)

Plenary Speaker

This session will be preceded by a plenary lecture given by Professor Susan
Hunston, University of Birmingham, UK
Lecture title: Towards a road map for exploring evaluative meaning

Abstract:
There are by now a plethora of approaches to investigating evaluative
meaning in corpora, but no very clear set of instructions for someone
beginning work in this area. This paper considers the available approaches
and asks whether sufficient common ground can be identified to devise a
‘road map’ for research.
